For my undergraduate thesis, me and the boys wrote some GPS code that referenced even ancient naval navigation books, and for offline calculations one of the required constants was, well, "the distance between your position and the center of earth". Turns out that information is exceedingly difficult to obtain, one can get the globe average, but since for fast/simple computation we were already making too many sacrifices, the cornerstone of accurate computation was this number, and we had to annoy a few land surveyors and geologists to get that information on a to-need, by-location basis.
