Tom Holland Getting Backshots refers to a gay sex scene from the TV show The Crowded Room in which actor Tom Holland (known for playing Spider-Man) is seen getting penetrated from behind (known colloquially as backshots). A clip of the scene from season one episode eight of The Crowded Room titled "Reunion" went viral on Twitter in July 2023, causing a slew of reactions and memes that likened it to shock media. Many of the memes were related to actress Zendaya (who's Holland's girlfriend) in which meme creators imagined what her reaction to seeing the scene might have been.

Origin

On July 14th, 2023, season one episode eight of The Crowded Room titled "Reunion" aired on Apple TV+.^[1] In one scene from the episode, Tom Holland's character Danny Sullivan is dressed as his female alter-ego (split personality) Ariana and is getting penetrated from behind by a Black, male love interest named Jerome.^[2] The scene was originally posted as three GIFs by Twitter^[3] user @MenMen2021 at around 6:43 a.m. EST on July 14th, gaining roughly 2,100 likes in less than a day (shown below).

Later on July 14th, 2023, Twitter^[4] user @SRVNGCVNT tweeted the video of the scene, captioning it, "Tom Holland as Ariana bathroom scene😭," and gaining roughly 4,300 likes in less than a day.

Spread

Going into the day, July 14th, 2023, Twitter users started to react to the series of GIFs that @MenMen2021 posted. For instance, one of the first viral instances was a quote retweet posted by Twitter^[5] user @fchwpoop which read, "zendaya gets run by 2 men and tom holland counters by getting also fucked by a man interesting strategy." The QRT gained roughly 1,100 likes in two hours (shown below, left). Around the same time, Twitter^[6] user @kirawontmiss tweeted a disappointed emoji captioned, "WHO PUT TOM HOLLAND GETTING BACKSHOTS ON THE TL," gaining roughly 28,400 likes in two hours (shown below, right).

Also on July 14th, 2023, Lena the Plug's Video With Jason Luv was uploaded to Twitter, coinciding with the discourse about Tom Holland's sex scene. In turn, tweets were posted that referenced both, such as Twitter^[7] user @LKnevermisses, whose QRT gained over 560 likes in one hour (shown below).

Similar to Twitter^[3] user @fchwpoop, others on the platform namedropped Zendaya in viral tweets.^[8] Much of the Zendaya-related discourse was about a then-recent threesome scene from the trailer for Zenday's then-upcoming film Challengers, which caused a stir on social media weeks prior.^[9] Other viral tweets^[10] referenced Adam 22 of No Jumper, again, in relation to his wife Lena the Plug's video.
