When the Universal Union, later refered to as "The Combine", swiftly brought the governments of Earth to total surrender during the Seven Hour War, they began a systematic process of consolidating and structuring Earth's resources into their industrial, logistical, scientific and military infrastructure. One resource of significance were human beings themselves, particularily for their capacity for invention and warfare. The Combine saw the adaptability and robustness of humans as a valuable addition to their ground army, and quickly designed a means for their assimilation. The typical Combine Soldier has seen multiple evolutions over the years of occupation, but what they represent has remained unchanged: the ultimate distilation of human beings into a fierce and effective fighting force for the Combine.
