Why would God put a tree in the garden that could f--- up the utopia he built? interesting question. i think i can hit them all in one go what exactly is the purpose of a human life? is it really to be as comfortable and free of care as possible? is goodness defined as absence of suffering, and by nothing else? if so then the fall of man was certainly the greatest tragedy possible and god is a big meaniehead who just wanted to ruin everything but consider the things that Adam and Eve didn't have. they didn't know anything. they never discovered anything. they never created anything. they never struggled and succeeded. they never did any good deeds. they never learned anything, never built anything. is that the life you'd like to have? imagine an endless IV morphine drip, a comfy chair, and an interesting TV show that never ends. is that the perfect life? as for free will - think of a time when you had the opportunity to do something selfish, but consciously chose to do the right thing instead. did you not burn inwardly with pride? would it have been the same if you were physically incapable of doing the wrong thing? these moments can be transcendent as for suffering and mortality- really all human suffering can be summed up with 'mortality', the inevitability of death. would mortal life be significantly more meaningful without cancer? somehow I think not. you would still die. most theological frameworks (certainly those involving YHWH) have provisions for a paradisaical afterlife. but even aside from that, these unavoidable sufferings give human beings chances to help each other to overcome them. their degree and number doesnt really matter that much. now mind you i'm not asking you to believe that it's true. or even that there is a god. im an atheist. just that there could theoretically be an internally logically and morally consistent good god that presides over this universe
