MUSIC THEORY CHEAT SHEET AKA. WRITE AWESOME MUSIC IN FIVE MINUTES First, select the progression you wantto play, progressions are different combinations of chords that give a song its specific sound. There are not too many of these and using the same as another song isn't stealing as long as you also don't use the same key (we'll come to that, it's no big hassle). Choose one based on the right column (the sound you want to emulate) and write it down. Sad ballad (Adam's Song) Wistful Ballad (The Black Parade Heavy/Funky Song (All songs by RATM) Rebelious (Red Fla Energetic (Take Me Out) Creepy stuff (the new Radiohead stu Nirvana/ Foo Fighters (Smells Like Teen Spirit i III -IV (or iv) - VI Key Chord Chart Ok, now you have to choose the key you're going to | E | F# play your progression in. The general vibe of the progression will stay the same whichever key you | Bm |F#m|G#dim! | C#m| |C#m D#m | | D E A A B | B |G#m|A#dim choose, but different keys add different flavours Major keys- happy, Minor keys - sad D | D | Em |F#m| G | A | Bm #dim E | E | F#m|G#m| A | B |C#m|D#dim| Mixing sad progressions with happy (major) keys F F GmAm BbC Dm Edi makes the song sound nironic". Furthermore as a G | G | Am | Bm | C | D | Em |F#dim general rule you can use this guideline: Minor A- melanholic, B- ,sharp", C- happy, D- ,,classical", E hard (most used in metal, but also in military music), F- passionate, G- tragic. Am Am Bdim C Dm Em F G Cm Cm DdimEb Fm GmAb BbHere is a practical example: Dm DmEdim F Gm Am Bb C Em | Em |F#dim | G | Am | Bm | C | D Fm Fm Gdim Ab Bbm Cm Db Eb you want to make it even sadder (minor key) and to Gm GmAdim Bb Cm Dm Eb F Look up the column for ,," and find what it says for A minor (Am)- Am, your first chord. Repeat for the whole progression (I IV-V V) and you should get the chords for the song you want: Am-Dm-Em-Em Say you want to play a sad ballad, our first table says that this is the way to go: I- IV-V- V. Now maybe make it melancholic (A key)-A+minor= A minor Voila! You just wrote your first song and it sounds awesome, just play it on the guitar (instructions for that latter too) and write some lyrics from the heart, congratulations you've got your first hit. Of course there is much more to music theory but for pop this is all you need to know (most songwriters don't much more either). Except maybe you want to know how to write a chorus that sounds differrent from the rest of the song? OK, thats simple too Lets use our first example, the uber-sad song in A minor - Am-Dm-Em-Em. So.. the "slice" of our key WOW, YOU EXPECT ME TO UNDERSAND THIS!?! - you may say at this moment, but don't worry its as simple as the table above. Its called ,,circle of fifths". Major (Dur) our ke So your song is in A minor and you want to write the chorus in a different key to make the song more interesting-no problem. But they must fit together. That's what this circle is for- to find which keys sound good with A minor The outer circle is major keys, the inner minor. Since our song is in A minor we look for A in the inner circle. Now that we have found it we can do two things: Use the major key (C) in the same ,,slice" major circle is the outside one, minor the inside one chorus happier and more energetical than the rest of the song (if our song was happy, we would use the minor key in the same ,,slice" to make it sound contemplative) or use one of the neighbours of Am within the same (minor-small) circle-either D or E- to just make the chorus diffe w in W wr ac se sam se minor we got: Am-Dm-Em-Em. Now we wa write WI WI rcomplete song now i My first Sona (in A m : Am-Dm-Em-Em Chorus: C-F-G-G write some lyrics ris
