College Republicans at the UNIVERSITYo VIRGINIA College Republicans at UVA Statement on August 12th "Unite the Right" Rally Tomorrow, August 12th, a group of so called "conservatives" will gather in Charlottesville for a rally. Among these groups are white nationalists, such as Richard Spencer, as well as those who identify with Nazism, who are in favor of apartheid, and other heinous ideologies. They have been promoting the event using flyers and posts that are reminiscent of Nazi propaganda, and have taken a directly provocative approach to holding this rally with the intention of intimidating minorities in the UVA and Charlottesville community. We categorically condemn this rally, and realize that it is not an effort to "unite the right" but a platform meant to divide our community by spewing hateful beliefs. Let us be absolutely clear: the hatred and ugliness of these groups are not representative of the Republican Party or the conservative movement. The Republican Party was founded in opposition to slavery, and its platform today promotes beliefs antithetical to those represented at this rally. This is now the latest of several rallies intended to spread hate in Charlottesville and the UVA community while attempting to call themselves conservatives. As College Republicans we must take an active role in combatting these vile beliefs. Whenever someone tries to use the conservative movement to justify these ideas, we must call them what they really are: outdated, backward beliefs held by those who have yet to come into the 21st century, and which will go down as a stain on our history. When these ideologies attempt to use the conservative movement, our movement, to legitimize these vile concepts, our organization will do everything in our power to reject them. We will continue to stand with our fellow CIOs and the University community to show those at the rally that their hatred has no place on our grounds.
