About

"Uso Da!" (Japanese: "嘘だ!") is a buzz word derived from the popular murder mystery series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, (shortened to "When They Cry" in the English version).

The phrase can be translated as, "That's a lie!" or "Lies!" in English.

Usage in Higurashi When They Cry

Although the usage of "Uso Da!" became most popular in late 2006, after the anime was aired, characters screaming the phrase can be heard in the original sound novel.

It is also heard several times during the anime adaptation:

However, in all cases, the character most commonly associated with the "Uso Da!" scream is Rena Ryugu (竜宮 レナ), stemming from the following scene (2nd episode in the anime adaptation):

Image Origin

Although the series' most popular adaptation is the anime, the manga became popular as well, producing several best-sellers.

The recognizable "Uso Da!" image is derived from two entire pages of one of the Higurashi manga adaptations, specifically the third chapter of the Abducted by Demons Arc (Onikakushi-hen) arc, written by Ryukishi07 and illustrated by Karin Suzuragi (read right-to-left).
