Trans Hydra or Gender Ideology Hydra is a drawing of a hydra monster designed with the colors of the trans pride flag. The symbol was originally created in May 2024 as an anti-trans, anti-gender ideology symbol by Gays Against Groomers in an attempt to illustrate how gender ideology has its "claws in every corporate sector," but was embraced by many in the transgender community, who began redrawing it and implementing it as a pro-trans symbol.

Origin

On May 3rd, 2024, the organization Gays Against Groomers posted a piece of artwork to X^[1] / Twitter (now deleted) depicting a hydra patterned with pink and blue, the colors of the trans pride flag, labeled the "Gender Ideology Hydra," writing, "Gender ideology isn't just a neo-religious cult; it is biotechnological warfare in drag, like a multi-headed hydra with claws in every corporate sector," garnering an unknown number of likes and views before it was deleted (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after it was posted, the trans community on X began embracing and repurposing the trans hydra as a pro-trans symbol. For example, on May 4th, 2024, X^[2] user @Nubbyderg posted, "The Trans Hydra is actually cool because it represents how we'll be difficult to snuff out, no matter how hard you try to destroy us, we come back twice as strong, every time."

Later that day, X^[3] user @bluefolf posted a video edit of the trans hydra on a flag pole, writing, "'Trans people are in a cult!!' *accidentally makes the coolest design for a pride flag ever seen,*" garnering over 80,000 likes in four days (shown below).

Also on May 4th, 2024, X^[4] user @reidslvrr posted a collection of different versions of the gender ideology hydra designed with colors of various pride flags, garnering over 28,000 likes in four days (examples shown below).

On May 5th, a post appropriating the trans hydra as a pro-trans rights symbol was posted to the subreddit /r/GenderAnarchy,^[5] garnering over 500 upvotes in three days (shown below). On May 6th, the original Gays Against Groomers post was shared to /r/AreTheCisOk,^[6] garnering over 1,000 upvotes in two days.

On May 7th, 2024, X^[7] user @thingsbydiana posted a redraw of the trans hydra, garnering over 35,000 likes in a day (shown below, left). On May 8th, X^[8] user @quillistic posted a redraw that gained over 230 likes in under 24 hours (shown below, right).
