This Edible Ain't Shit (also These Edibles Ain't Shit) refers to a meme format in which a person or a character says "This edible ain't shit," meaning that they don't feel high after ingesting edible marijuana. The second image reveals them experiencing intoxication or hallucinations when the edible begins to take effect. In October 2020, the meme regained popularity with video edits.

Origin

Unlike marijuana taken through smoking, ingesting marijuana via food or drink such as a brownie, cookie, tea, etc. digests through the bloodstream, meaning its effects are less immediate, but last longer and can potentially be more potent than marijuana that's smoked.[1] "This edible ain't shit" would be said by a person refers to the feeling prior to feeling the effects of edible marijuana, and the picture used in the meme depicts their intense level of intoxication after the edible takes effect.

On November 3rd, 2016, Twitter[2] user @Edlauren11posted the first instance of the joke template, using a scene from King of the Hill as the punchline image, gaining over 13,000 retweets and 23,000 likes (shown below).

After the popularity of @Edlauren11's post, other users began adopting the format, which saw consistent use over the course of the following months. On May 9th, 2017, Twitter user @Gabriella_Ann_ posted a Mocking Spongebob variation, gaining over 24,000 retweets and 70,000 likes (shown below, left). On February 6th, 2017, Twitter user @zelpolval uploaded a variation featuring a GIF of Lady Gaga's Halftime Show, gaining over 440 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, right).

The meme continued to see use over the course of 2017 and has been frequently used in the following years. Popular examples from 2018 include a tweet by @offlinemalek quoting a Kourtney Kardashian tweet, gaining over 1,100 retweets and 4,400 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @fagtwigs uploaded the joke with a video of Azealia Banks, gaining over 80 retweets and 270 likes (shown below, right). The meme was covered by The Daily Dot.[3]

2020 Resurgence

In October 2020, the format regained relevance in the form of video edits. While the format has been used prior in 2020, it's return to viral popularity is mostly linked to October 17th, 2020, Barack Obama TikTok[4] posted by content creator bearbubb (bearboob). The post received over 474,600 views and 118,400 likes in three weeks (shown below).

In the following days, the format gained significant popularity among content creators on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. For example, on October 21st, 2020, Instagram[5] user huiyan_long posted a Family Guy meme that received over 55,400 views and 8,100 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On October 22nd, Instagram[6] user nitro.if posted a Super Mario meme that received over 159,600 views and 38,600 likes in the same period (shown below, right).



The format maintained notable popularity online in the following weeks. On November 4th, 2020, YouTube[7]
channel Lessons in Meme Culture uploaded a video about the meme.
