Yo Mama refers to a comedy YouTube series hosted by cartoon protagonist Brody Foxx mainly focused on "yo mama" jokes. In 2020, the series shifted towards more self-aware and ironic humor, with the channel gaining a larger social media presence starting in April 2020. The series concluded on October 31st, 2020, with a yet-to-be revealed sequel series announced.

History

On July 8th, 2011, the first episode of Yo Mama YouTube series, created by Zack James and Alex Negrete and voiced by Brock Baker, premiered (shown below).^[1] In the series, cartoon protagonist Brody Foxx, a textbook Chad, makes stereotypical "yo mama" jokes such as "yo mama so fat," "yo mama so stupid," "yo mama so poor" etc. As of May 2020, a video "100 Yo Mama Jokes – Can You Watch Them All?" was the most-watched video on the channel with nearly 100 million views accumulated in six years (shown below, right).^[2]

The channel often exploited popular internet trends such as making videos themed around Five Nights at Freddy's, Minecraft, Fortnite, Fidget Spinners etc. (examples shown below). Additionally, the channel comment suggestions for its jokes.

As of May 26th, 2020, the channel uploaded over 1160 videos and had 4.7 million subscribers, with the official Twitter^[3] account @BrodyFoxx having over 28,300 followers.

2020 Content Changes

Starting in 2019 and more noticeably in 2020, the channel's gravitated towards more self-aware and ironic humor, embracing the cringeworthy reputation of its original content.

On November 22nd, 2019, YouTuber^[4] Memeulous posted a video in which he reviewed the channel and jokingly asked to be featured in a Yo Mama video, gaining over 1.7 million views. On April 20th, Yo Mama Pornhub^[5] channel posted a NSFW joke about of Memeulos, gaining over 200,000 views in one month. On April 21st and 23rd, Yo Mama YouTube^[6][7] channel posted a SFW version of the joke (shown below, right) and a video in which Zach James, the creator of the series, announced that he was coming out of retirement and was planning to make similar videos about several more YouTubers (shown below, left).

Also starting on April 21st, Yo Mama, posting as Brody Foxx, significantly increased its Twitter presence, with several tweets posted in the following month going viral.^[8][9][10] On May 2nd, 2020, Yo Mama posted a meme compilation "YO MAMA is a Terrible Channel", with Brock Baker dubbing popular ironic memes about the series (shown below).^[11]

On May 10th, 2020, Zach James posted a video in which he admitted that he has autism and talked about his life with the disorder.^[12]

Starting on May 18th, 2020, Yo Mama posted a series of tweets^[13] and videos^[14] about the feud between Keemstar and Ethan Klein. In the videos and tweets, Yo Mama claimed that Keemstar is tied to the alt-right.

"The Final Joke" and Unnamed Sequel

On June 18th, 2020, the official Twitter^[20] channel for the series announced "the final yo mama joke," teasing it multiple times in the following months. On October 23rd, 2020, Yo Mama uploaded^[21] a date reveal trailer for the finale (shown below).

On October 31st, 2020, Yo Mama uploaded^[22] "The Final Joke," final episode of the series. The nine minute episode was preceded by five connected minisodes and received nearly 900,000 views in three days (shown below).

Following the release of the series, series creator Zach James revealed^[23][24] that a new YouTube series featuring the same cast of characters would be launched in the future.

Related Memes

"Dummy Thicc" Videos

Starting in May 2019, Yo Mama posted several "dummy thicc" jokes in which various characters, including Big Chungus, twerked while Brody Foxx clapped (shown below). Starting in April 2020, the clips, particularly the one featuring Big Chungus, received viral spread online.

Like So Brody Can See

Like So Brody Can See is a phrase that has often been used by YouTube commenters that suggest their versions of 'yo mama' jokes to be used in future episodes. The phrase, used to prompt the like count of the post and push it upwards in the comment section, has become a meme on the channel, later spreading beyond YouTube and often used to reference the series.

Fandom

Starting in April 2019, the Yo Mama series has been a popular subject of ironic memes. On April 2nd, 2019, Twitter^[15] user @ProGamerDude_ posted a dubbed reaction meme which gained over 50 retweets and 200 likes and received viral spread online in the following months (shown below).

Through 2019, Yo Mama has been a popular subject of ironic memes in communities such as /r/okbuddyretard^[16][17] (example posts shown below).

Additionally, screenshots of comments made by the viewers of Yo Mama YouTube channel has often been posted in /r/youngpeopleyoutubesubreddit.^[18][19]
