About

Nanalan' is a Canadian children's television series that ran from 1999-2004. Created by Jason Hopely and Jamie Shannon, the show stars the 3-year-old Mona and her pet dog Russel as they explore and learn in Nana's backyard. Online, the show has inspired a series of in-jokes and is revered for being unintentionally funny with Mona's distinctive gibberish and naiveté.

History

Nanalan' aired from 1999 to 2004 on CBC television in Canada before airing on Nick Jr. and Fox Kids afterward.[1]



Online Presence

In December of 2015, Tumblr user ebilflindas uploaded an edited scene from the Nanalan' episode titled "Backyard Fun", which gained 123,293 notes in a span of 3 months.[2] The post turned the garden scene infamous, with "Peepo" becoming one of the most salient in-jokes in Nanalan'. A single topic blog for Nanalan' on Tumblr exists that focuses on ironic gifs and in-jokes.[3]

Who's That Wonderful Girl?

Nanalan's Princess Song 'Who's That Wonderful Girl' is an exploitable video in which Mona's grandmother sings "Who's That Wonderful Girl" as Mona enters the living room wearing a princess costume. The scene resurfaced in a series of POV and relatable memes on TikTok, often related to people being patronized or praised for doing normal things, such as "Pov: me hyping up my little sister after she got a new outfit."

Hey Birdie

Hey Birdie refers to a clip from Nanalan' in which Mona comforts a hurt bird. The clip became a popular sound on TikTok and was usually paired with humorous captions describing times they feel weak.
