Makima's "Bang"

Makima's "Bang" refers to a panel from the manga series Chainsaw Man in which the character Makima kills the character Power by obliterating her torso with an invisible force seemingly channeled through her index finger. Online, the panel has been edited in various ways as an exploitable, with Power often replaced with characters from various franchises.

Origin

On August 23rd, 2020, chapter 81 of the Chainsaw Man manga series was released.^[1] In the chapter, the character Makima kills the character Power by pointing her index finger at her, obliterating her torso with an invisible force so that just her head and her legs remain (panel shown below).

Starting the same day, the panel received a notable spread online. For example, an August 23rd, 2020, tweet^[2] by user @D_Kumii received 37 retweets and over 470 likes. A same-day tweet^[3] by @StoneBrosRiseUp received 22 retweets and over 240 likes.

The scene gained initial popularity in memes in mid-January 2021, with the earliest found edits posted by Tumblr^[4] user donutsandsamurai on January 17th, 2021, and Redditor^[5] byzothe1 on January 18th, 2021 (shown below, left and right). The posts gained 41 likes and reblogs and over 520 upvotes in four months, respectively.

Spread

Edits based on the panel did not see active spread until March 2021, when the panel gained popularity online, particularly in the Chainsaw Man pochitaposting Facebook group. Starting in mid-March 2021, multiple memes in which either Makima or Power were replaced with other characters were posted in the group and other Chainsaw Man communities. For example, on April 22nd, 2021, Facebook^[6] user Raul Ochoa posted a meme in which the character Satoru Gojo from the Jujutsu Kaisen series replaced Makima, with the post gaining over 4,000 reactions and 1,500 shares in one month (shown below, left).

On April 27th, 2021, gimmick Facebook^[7] page Makima Bangs your favourite character was created, posting memes in which Power was replaced with characters from various franchises. On May 2nd, the Facebook^[8] page Makima Bangs your favourite character posted another variant with a crewmate from Among Us being killed, receiving 284 likes in 26 days (shown below, right).
