American Krogan Racist Mod Controversy

Overview

The American Krogan Racist Mod Controversy is a controversy surrounding a Fallout 4 mod by self-proclaimed "pro-white" commentator American Krogan that removes or replaces all people of color in the game with white people. Krogan announced the mod via Twitter on August 19th, 2022, and was quickly met with backlash. On August 22nd, discussions about American Krogan and his mod were banned from the subreddit /r/MassEffect, with some speculating that he might make a similar mod for the Mass Effect series based on his name.

History

Background

American Krogan describes his content as "pro-white analysis and commentary on anti-white video games" in his Twitter bio. He is active on several social media platforms frequented by alt-right and far-right voices, including Gab, Odysee (where he has over 4,500 followers) and Telegram. ^[1]

Fallout 4 POC Replacement Mod

On August 19th, 2022, Twitter^[2] user and self-described "pro-white" analyst and commentator @AmericanKrogan posted a screenshot of Preston Garvey from Fallout 4, announcing he's seeking voice actors, writing, "So, I'm making a mod that removes all POCs from Fallout 4. I'm almost done with the visual portion, but now I need voice actors to redo certain characters. The biggest workload will probably be for Preston Garvey. Anyone think they can do it?" garnering over 1,500 likes and 150 retweets in four days (shown below, left). On August 20th, he retweeted^[3] the post with another screenshot of Tinker Tom, writing, "We're going probably use most of his old lines, but tweak them so that Tom will now be a White autistic sperg," garnering over 60 likes in three days (shown below, right).

The initial post gained significant backlash through quote-tweets and posts on Twitter^[4][5] deeming the mod racist. On August 20th, @AmericanKrogan posted a screenshot to Twitter^[6] from Far Cry 2 defending himself, writing, "For the record, I'd mod out most of the White people in Far Cry 2, if I could. It doesn't make sense that half the mercs running around in an African civil war are White" (shown below).

/r/MassEffect Discussion Ban

On August 21st, 2022, Redditor u/AnAutisticTeen^[7] made a now-deleted post to /r/MassEffect seemingly about American Krogan's mod, garnering over 1,300 upvotes in two days. That day, user Audemus77 made a comment^[8] that gained over 1,300 upvotes, writing:

"I'm the NexusMods moderator for the Mass Effect series and if he (or anyone) tries that shit on my watch it’s getting binned faster than you can say 'I should go'"

On August 22nd, the moderators of /r/MassEffect^[9] made a post announcing that discussions about American Krogan have been banned, writing that the subreddit has been "brigaded by racists and the posts about him are causing problems for the mod team," garnering over 1,900 upvotes in a day.

Continued Mod Production

On August 22nd, 2022, @AmericanKrogan tweeted^[10] that he was looking for voice actors for The Bobrov brothers, two Russian characters who he plans to replace with Bostonians, garnering over 100 likes in a day (shown below, left). On August 23rd, @AmericanKrogan tweeted^[11] announcing he found a voice actor for Preston Garvey, garnering over 60 likes in under a day (shown below, right).
