Dorime Cheems

About

Dorime refers to a lyrical part from the French new-age electronica group Era's song Ameno, which is frequently combined with the doge variant Cheems, Vocaloid character Hatsune Miku, and the pray emoticon (🙏). While the song was initially popularized in remixes in 2014 and 2015, remixes with Cheems and Miku didn't occur until late 2019.

Origin

On December 17th, 2019, Youtuber MurdockCakeLie^[1] uploaded a video collage of the doge variant Cheems with the pray emoticon in front of it, accompanied by the lyrics of "Ameno," The video received over 850,000 views in a month (shown below, left). However a shorter version, featuring less edits, was also uploaded to YouTube a few weeks prior on November 30th by YouTuber The Reposter Of The Week. This version managed to gather 59,000 views in the same timespan (shown below, right), making it difficult to pinpoint when Cheems was first associated with Ameno.

Precursor: Ameno

On June 1st, 1996, Era released "Ameno," a single of their eponymous debut album (shown below, left). In early 2014, the song was popularized on Twitch by streamer Noxious, who would repeatedly play the song while playing the game Hearthstone. In reply to this, viewers began spamming "༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つAMENO༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ" in his chat (shown below, right).

On December 10th, 2019, YouTuber 7UP Doge published a video featuring Cheems and several other elements from the Dormie Cheems meme. These include the prayer hands emoji and Ameno. In less than three months, the video received more than 11,000 views (shown below).

Spread

On December 18th, 2019, one day after the versions by MurdockCakeLie, Youtuber Sigma^[2] uploaded an edited version of MurdockCakeLie's video which changed the song to their vocaloid cover (shown below, left) and added Miku's hair to the images. The video gained over 1.8 million views in a month (shown below, right).

This edit soon inspired different edits. On December 25th, 2019, Youtuber Fuou Marinas^[9] uploaded a version featuring Rick Astley (shown below, left), which was possibly inspired by a series of Bait and Switch videos which had begun to spread on sites and apps which offer video sharing such as Discord. On January 4th, 2020, Youtuber kyOresu^[10] uploaded a loli cover (shown below, right), featuring an extended version of an earlier video they created on December 4th, 2019; which predated the Cheems videos and was possibly inspired by the Ameno meme. Both videos managed to gather respectively over 205,000 and 570,000 views in the following month.

The original edit featuring Hatsune Miku also led to the creation of similar videos using other Vocaloid characters. On December 28th, Youtuber Murasaki^[7] created a video featuring Vocaloid character Kagamine Len (shown below, left). A few days later, on January 1st, 2020, Youtuber Teto Chan!^[8] uploaded a version using Vocaloid character Kasane Teto (shown below, right). Both versions managed to gather respectively over 100,000 and 350,000 views in the following month.

On January 8th, 2020, Twitter user Midorin_HD^[4] tweeted a drawing of religious themed cheems with Hatsune Miku's hair which receiver over 16,300 likes in 12 days (shown below, left). The next day, Twitter user Kekeflipnote^[5] shared an animation of the dog with its hair flowing which accumulated over 38,400 likes in 11 days (shown below, center). On January 15th, Twitter user BSApricot^[6] shared a drawing of Hatsune Miku as a nun with dog-like features. The post garnered over 23,000 likes in five days (shown below right).

You Have Been Dorime'd

As early as December 20th, an edited version became frequently used in Bait and Switch videos on sites and apps which offer video sharing such as Discord (example shown below, left). In these videos the preview image is altered to show something pornographic or lewd to switch to Dorime upon play accompanied by the text "You Have Been Dorime'd." As the videos spread, various religious advice were added such as reminding the viewer to complete their 5 daily prayers and informing them the Lord sees all (example shown below, right). As it spread, the practice quickly became known as having been "Dorime'd." Due to the nature of these apps, with most content being shared on private servers between users, the original creators of specific edits are difficult to trace.

On December 25th, 2019, Youtuber The Acid Muskitears^[3] uploaded an extended version of the video by MurdockCakeLie. The video starts with a quick still reading [Le Sexi image] before switching to Cheems alongside other doge variants. The video managed to gather over 285,000 views in a month.
