About

"Buddy Holly" is a song from Weezer's 1994 album The Blue Album. The song and its music video have become a viral hit, and have received several fan works including covers, remixes, and various other memes. The song has also been used as a bait-and-switch meme on TikTok, better known as getting "Weezered".

Origin

The song was first released on Weezer's Blue Album on May 10th, 1994,[1] and was released as a single on September 7th, 1994.[2] On June 17th, 2009, the song's music video (shown below, left) was posted to YouTube by Weezer's official channel, where it received over 65 million views in over thirteen years. The music video features Weezer performing the song as if it was an episode of Happy Days, with various characters from the show dancing to the song using edited clips from the show. Al Molinaro, however, plays his old Happy Days character Al Delvecchio in the video. The music video was also included in the installation CD-ROM for Windows 95 (shown below, right).[3]

On May 25th, 2017, Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard lip-synced the song on an episode of Lip Sync Battle while dressed up as Buddy Holly.[4] A clip of the episode (shown below) was posted to YouTube by Comedy Central UK on February 26th, 2018, where it received over 3.1 million views in over four years.



On March 20th, 2019, YouTube user Ska Tune Network posted a Ska cover of the song. The cover video (shown below, left) received over 185,000 views in over three years. On May 21st, 2021, YouTube user Frog Leap Studios (Leo Moracchioli) posted a metal cover of the song. The cover video (shown below, right) received over 368,000 views in over one year.



On January 24th, 2022, YouTube user Kainoah Bowman posted a Shorts video in which he gives a tutorial on how to perform the guitar lick from the song. The video (shown below) received over 466,000 views and over 33,000 likes in over nine months.



On July 20th, 2022, YouTube user Sadego! posted a cover of the song using the instruments and sounds from Super Mario 64. The cover (shown below, left) received over 114,000 views in nearly four months. On August 22nd, 2022, YouTube user eg_9371 posted a cover of the song in the style of the 1993 computer game Doom. The cover (shown below, right) received over 213,000 views in nearly three months.



You Just Got Weezered / Get Weezered

The song was also used as a popular bait-and-switch meme on TikTok known as You Just Got Weezered or Get Weezered.[5][6] The meme involves zooming in heavily on a blue object, and/or quickly cutting to the guitar lick part of the song.
